GREECE - Primary school Parapotamou
The partner organization is the Elementary School of Parapotamos, which is a non-profitable, public school that is located in a village called “Parapotamos”. Parapotamos is an extremely small, mountainous village of Thesprotia that is only 10 km far from Igoumenitsa, the capital city of Thesprotia.
The Elementary School of Parapotamos has 52 students and 12 teachers. The school follows a curriculum that is fixed by the Greek Ministry of Education which also assesses the quality of schools in Greece through inspection – examination of the following: curricula, resources and management, student achievements, learning and teaching support, school administration, teachers’ efficiency and education. The school and the teachers practice active teaching with interactive and creative learning using innovative techniques and methods and ICT.
The school administration gives great importance to continuous professional development of its staff, and therefore during the school year are organized a numerous seminars, conferences, workshops and courses on regional mostly level.
We have to note that the school and its staff are extremely concerned and sensible to the fact that nowadays their students read less and less, they write with many mistakes, both in their mother tongue and in the second language and spend more time in front of a computer, chatting with a friend or playing games, and they are looking for ways to promote, improve and enhance their student’s reading and writing skills. This could be achieved through creative and innovative ways, for instance, write an article for the school newspaper, correspondence using internet, write / tell a story, etc. There are ways to diffuse and make reading and writing more attractive to students.
Thanks to our participation in this project, our teachers, who are well-educated and very experienced, would have the possibility to exchange ideas and strategies, gain important experience on various teaching methods, integrate ICT tools in their teaching methods and in this way enhance and enrich their teaching techniques.
